Her Last Cry, Pamela Fagan Hutchins

It is just so damn good! Book 3, Her Last Cry, in the Delaney Pace Series from Pamela Fagan Hutchins is my favorite in the series so far. That is probably because some loose ends are tied up and we have less of a focus on Kateena - or Kat as she's going by now. There is more intrigue amongst scandals in politics and environmentalist advocates, and those with lots and lots of money. The criminals in this iteration are also cooler, more Wyoming-esque and not as creepy as the previous bad guys Hutchins brought us. For all of these reasons, this novel rises to the top and would read well even as a standalone novel. Readers who may stumble upon this book first would certainly dig up Books 1 and 2 to get up to speed on the story and the characters.
On the series as a whole: I appreciate that Hutchins always begins with the murder in these three books so that we can piece together who did it while being slightly ahead of beloved Leo and Delaney. I find their relationship so amusing and entertaining - I'm always looking for more from their banter and for them to address their mutual attraction. I also love the addition of Carrie Hoff and Freddy so Kat can have more buddies and maybe some more age-relevant trouble to get into. The web weaved for each book has many details - don't read these while too tired or you'll miss the trail of breadcrumbs and clues Hutchins leaves for us along the way. The whole set is highly entertaining so make sure you pick these up this week as they are out January 16 in all formats. I was spoiled by being able to devour all three in quick succession, but now we are at the mercy of Hutchins and her publishers. Here's hoping there are more books coming so we can continue following along!

On the 2024 book challenge: This book takes down state number 2 in my journey to read a book featured in each of the United States - Wyoming! And the state and backdrop in these novels is just as much a part of the story as the characters who come alive off the pages. The rugged terrain is always a constant danger to Delaney and Leo, who is a transplant from California and earning his way through mountain living. It frames the story, highlighting difficulties of no wifi, or the use of vehicles that can, and cannot, traverse the areas they need to explore. Join me in my book challenge!
